Breaking News: Malaysia to release MH370 report, prime minister tells CNN

 Facing anger from families of Flight 370 passengers, Malaysia's prime minister said Thursday his government will release its preliminary report on the plane's disappearance.

In a TV exclusive, Najib Razak told CNN the report will be available next week.

"I have directed an internal investigation team of experts to look at the report, and there is a likelihood that next week we could release the report," Najib said. Later in the interview with CNN's Richard Quest, he gave a more definitive statement -- saying the report will be released next week.

The report has already been sent to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the U.N. body for global aviation, but not made available to the public.

'What's so confidential about the data?'

The ICAO told CNN about a safety recommendation in the report: Malaysia said the aviation world needs to look at real-time tracking of commercial aircraft. It's the same recommendation that was made after the Air France Flight 447 disaster in 2009.

Earlier Thursday, the partner of one of the passengers accused Malaysian authorities of seeming "to be choosing to treat us as if we are the enemy as opposed to an interested party in helping to solve this mystery,"

We need a fresh start here," Sarah Bajc, partner of passenger Philip Wood, said on CNN's "New Day."

"We've been sitting on opposite sides of the table. They have a briefing, they tell us what they know and we ask them questions. That's just kind of broken. I think we need to start from scratch and sit down and have a positive dialogue."

Families don't "necessarily believe" that the Malaysian authorities are "withholding any new information other than the facts that we've already asked for," she added.

A committee representing some of the Chinese families have posted 26 questions on the Chinese social media site Weibo.

Usually, such reports to the ICAO are public, says CNN aviation correspondent Richard Quest.

"In most cases, the report is published because it's not a controversial document," he said. "It's a statement of facts -- what happened. And if there are any controversial or difficult facts, they can be redacted."

Malaysia has insisted it has nothing to hide and is working to find answers.

Families plan to demand answers from Boeing

While pushing Malaysian authorities for answers, "we're also extending our reach now," Bajc said. Some of the questions the families have, including technical questions, "we will be bringing directly to Boeing. Boeing has a shareholders meeting next week. And if we're not getting information directly from Malaysia Airlines and from the Malaysian government, we might as well try to go directly to the source.

"Boeing is a publicly traded company in the United States, and that puts them in a position of a little bit more fiduciary responsibility," she said.

MH370: Every piece of debris counts

 

The missing flight is a Boeing 777.

Asked for a response, Boeing sent CNN a written statement: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies continue to be with the families and loved ones of those aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Boeing continues to serve as a technical adviser to the U.S. National Transportation (Safety) Board, and in that role we have been an active and engaged party to the investigation."

As an underwater drone keeps going up and back down, so do hopes that evidence of the plane may be found.

A metal object that washed ashore in Western Australia and sparked the curiosity of investigators Wednesday turned out to be unrelated.

And while the Bluefin-21 plunged into the Indian Ocean for its 12th mission Thursday, no one was certain the drone would find anything new.

"I think the chances are one out of 10," said Jules Jaffe, research oceanographer for the Marine Physical Laboratory.

The underwater probe has already scanned 90% of the designated search area, with no significant results.

Thursday marks day 48 of the search for the plane, which disappeared on March 8 on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing with 239 people on board.

What's next?

Malaysian and Australian authorities are mapping out a long-term strategy for the search, which could go on for months or years.

An expanded search area might include the last 370 miles (595 kilometers) of the plane's flight path, ocean search specialist Rob McCallum said.

"If the idea is to go more strategic and investigate the entire aircraft flight path, maybe 15 miles or so either side, then you need a more strategic tool, and something like a deep-towed sonar that can provide a very large range indeed -- at the expense of resolution."

The use of a deep-towed submersible device called the Orion is overdue, said Geoffrey Thomas, managing director of AirlineRatings.com.

"That should be brought in as quickly as possible, again, from the United States."

He said it may be time to go back and revisit the calculations of where the plane may be, although officials have already been doing that.

"This is not an exact science," Thomas said. "We have to understand that."

Why so private?

Malaysia has not been known as a model of transparency. The same political party has ruled the country for past 50 years, and the media is not completely free.

For its part, the Malaysian Cabinet has agreed to have an international team investigate the disappearance of Flight 370, the country's acting transportation minister said.

Hishammuddin Hussein said the names of the members will be announced next week. He also said the team will not be looking into the criminal aspects of the investigation, which remain under the Royal Malaysian Police.

"The main purpose is to evaluate and determine the cause of the accident," Hishammuddin said.

Ukraine crisis: Russia 'to respond if its interests' attacked

Russia will respond if its interests in Ukraine are attacked, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said, drawing a parallel with the 2008 Georgian war.

Speaking to Russian state TV channel RT, Mr Lavrov also accused the US of "running the show" in Ukraine.
It was "quite telling" that Kiev had re-launched its "anti-terrorist" operation during a visit by US Vice-President Joe Biden, he said.
Ukraine's government is struggling with an armed revolt in the country's east.
Kiev and the West say Moscow commands gunmen there - a charge denied by Russia.
In recent weeks, pro-Russian militants have seized administrative buildings in at least a dozen towns in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
They have installed their own officials, in similar tactics to those used to take over the Ukrainian region of Crimea earlier this year.

The US has called on Moscow to ask pro-Russian gunmen to lay down their weapons and leave public buildings. It has also urged Russia to tone down its aggressive rhetoric or face further sanctions.

As you drive into Krasnoarmiisk, a large sign declares "Glory to the Coal Miners!".
This is an industrial town and people here are proud of their working tradition. One resident told me: "We're too busy working to play politics."
But not everyone is "too busy".
On the square outside the local administration building, 100 people gathered to demand a referendum on greater autonomy for the Donetsk region.
The town square meeting appeared to have been organised by activists from the city of Donetsk 70km (43 miles) away. Some of the local residents in the crowd seemed suspicious of the visitors.
An argument broke out in front of me between two ladies: one said she supported a united Ukraine and claimed the crowd was being "duped" by separatists; the other denounced the government in Kiev and praised Russia and the Soviet Union.

"If our interests, our legitimate interests, the interests of Russians have been attacked directly, like they were in South Ossetia for example, I do not see any other way but to respond in full accordance with international law," Mr Lavrov said.

Russian fought a brief war with Georgia in the summer of 2008 after Tbilisi sent troops into the breakaway region of South Ossetia to regain control from the Russian-backed rebels.
Thousands of Russian troops have massed along Ukraine's borders in recent weeks.
Mr Lavrov added: "There is no reason not to believe that the Americans are running the show."
He also reiterated accusations that Kiev had failed to fulfil commitments laid out in the 17 April Geneva accord designed to end the crisis.
The EU and US accuse Russia of controlling the gunmen, and of failing to honour the Geneva accord.
'Torture claims' Meanwhile, the standoff in towns across Donetsk region appears to be intensifying.
A pro-Kiev local councillor was found dead on Tuesday near the flashpoint city of Sloviansk.
Ukrainian officials said Volodymyr Rybak's body suggested he had suffered "brutal torture".
And the US state department has said it is "deeply concerned" at reports that pro-Russian militants in Sloviansk are holding American journalist Simon Ostrovsky, who works for Vice News.
Unrest began in Ukraine last November over whether the country should look towards Moscow or the West.

TONTO DIKE DISOWN SIBLINGS

The 10th of April is celebrated as the World Siblings Day but for controversial Nollywood actress and singer, Tonto Dikeh, she is her own family and none of her six siblings is worth addressing as so.
As Nigeria and other countries all over the world celebrated their siblings, Tonto or Poko, as she is fondly called, disowned her own and even took to twitter to let them know that there is no connection between them.
Tonto's stance on her family may be as a result of the beef she had with them few weeks ago when she took to social media to tell a touching and emotional story of how she had to struggle to send herself to school and even had to clean her school mates rooms just to get N200.

Nigerian senator: '135 civilians killed' in attacks

Boko Haram has been accused of numerous attacks in the north including one last month in Bama, Borno State

Gunmen have killed 135 civilians in north east Nigeria since Wednesday, a senior official from the region has told the BBC.

Borno state senator Ahmed Zannah said the killings took place in at least three separate attacks in the state.
The attackers are suspected to be from the Islamist Boko Haram movement.
At least 1,500 people, half of them civilian, have been killed in the restive north-eastern region this year, according to Amnesty International.
The organisation blamed both "an increase in attacks by Boko Haram and uncontrolled reprisals by Nigeria's security forces" for the high death toll.
Women 'abducted' Senator Zannah said the attackers first target was a teacher training college in the town of Dikwa.
They killed five people there and abducted several women, he said.
The attackers burned down the college library before escaping, Mr Zannah said.
The militants then attacked two villages near the border with Cameroon killing a further 130 people, the senator said.
The attacks took place on Wednesday and Thursday, with initial reports claiming around 70 people had been killed.

The Nigerian military has not yet commented on the attacks.
A state of emergency has been in place since last year in the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in north-east Nigeria.
Human rights groups have criticised both Boko Haram and Nigeria's military for failing to protect civilians.
Amnesty International said last month that Nigeria's army killed around 600 people after a Boko Haram attack.
Some 250,000 people have been forced to leave their homes because of the fighting, the Nigerian government's relief agency said.
